Olympic Champion Vivian Kong Inspires Global Youth at Hong Kong’s Youth Development Summit

Berita Baru, Hong Kong – Hong Kong’s fencing champion, Vivian Kong Man-wai, who clinched the gold medal in the women’s individual epee event at the 2024 Paris Olympics, took center stage at the Youth Development Summit today, sharing her journey and insights with the next generation of leaders.

The 30-year-old world number one fencer spoke passionately about the power of positive thinking and its transformative impact on her career during the summit’s third session, titled “Nurturing Positive Thinking Amongst Young People for a Brighter Tomorrow.” Kong revealed how she harnessed her nervous energy and turned it into an intensive training regime that bolstered her confidence ahead of the Olympic Games.

“Every time I felt nervous, I channeled that energy into training. The more anxious I was, the harder I trained, and that gave me the confidence to perform at my best in the Olympics. I learned not to fear the outcome but to focus on giving my all,” Kong shared as quoted from Bernama.

With nearly two decades of experience in fencing, Kong’s triumph in Paris came despite significant setbacks, including two torn cruciate ligaments. Following her Olympic victory, she announced her retirement from professional fencing and expressed her plans to embark on a new career. She also aims to establish her own charity to help children rediscover the joy and playfulness in sports.

The Youth Development Summit, themed “Set Sail for New Horizons,” serves as a major platform for youth engagement, attracting over 500 international participants from regions including Mainland China, Singapore, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand.

Representing Malaysia at the summit, Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli emphasized the critical role of youth empowerment in shaping the future. In his keynote address, he underscored the importance of equipping young people with the necessary tools, opportunities, and mindset to succeed.
