Indonesian Army Receives 560 Locally Produced Armored Vehicles

Berita Baru, Jakarta – The Indonesian Army has received over 560 domestically produced armored vehicles, marking a significant milestone in the country’s defense strategy and push for military self-reliance. The vehicles, which include medium tanks and tactical transport units, will support defensive operations and peacekeeping missions, according to officials.

The delivery is part of Indonesia’s broader defense modernization efforts, with national enterprise PT Pindad playing a crucial role in the production of these advanced vehicles. “We hope that the handover of defense and security equipment can revive trust in the domestic defense industry,” said PT Pindad Director Abraham Mose, Reported from The Defense Post page on Wednesday (9/10/2024).

Among the key assets delivered is the PT Pindad Pandur II 8×8, an armored personnel carrier designed for troop transport and fire support. Known for its mobility and firepower flexibility, the Pandur can carry various weapon systems, making it a versatile tool on the battlefield.

Additionally, the Harimau medium tank, co-developed by PT Pindad and Turkish defense company FNSS, was also handed over. Specifically designed for Southeast Asia’s terrain, the Harimau is equipped with a 105 mm caliber cannon, a 7.62 mm caliber machine gun, and advanced ballistic and mine resistance systems. The tank integrates electronic control systems and heavy-duty suspension to enhance operational versatility.

The move comes as Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s largest economy, continues to prioritize defense modernization. In 2024, President Joko Widodo approved a 20% increase in defense spending compared to the previous year. The country’s defense budget is expected to reach $9.7 billion by 2028, according to GlobalData.

This delivery underscores Jakarta’s commitment to strengthening its national defense capabilities, with the local industry playing a key role in ensuring that the military is equipped with modern and reliable assets.
